Silver fillings, also known as amalgams (a mixture of mercury and other metals), is used to fill a tooth after the decay has been removed. It is a time tested method of 150 years. It is used over a billion times per year. It continues to be the most effective and least expensive method for restoring the health of the tooth and avoiding extraction.
Silver fillings are perfectly safe for 99% of the population. Other types, such as porcelain, gold, and composite can used, but they are more expensive and take longer to complete.
White fillings are the most widely used type, and they can be used on anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth. Also known as composite fillings, they’re made of a glass or quartz in resin. They’re very versatile and can also be used for inlays, veneers, and crowns.
White fillings offer the following advantages: good for small to medium-sized cavities, strong and durable, color can be closely matched to your existing teeth, helps preserve more of the natural tooth. We usually complete white fillings in one appointment. The process includes the following steps: removing the decayed portion of the tooth, layering the filling in the tooth, hardening each layer with a special light, reshaping the filling material , and polishing the composite.
